In Ulaanbaatar, work on a new, modern library has started
Construction has begun on a model library adjacent to the Ulaanbaatar City Central Public Library, which will be outfitted with cutting-edge technology and provide all types of services in accordance with global standards. The library will go into operation in February of next year. The initiative is being executed as part of the Overseas Korean Studies Library project, which was launched by the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Culture. The library building has four floors with an area of 2,500 square meters. Each floor will provide books and cultural services appropriate to the age of readers, as well as a coffee shop, meet-the-author hours, book launches, an e-station, and a special corner for preschoolers.
“The external library construction is scheduled to be finished in November. On February 1st of the following year, the technical, equipment, and interior decoration will be finished. The library personnel began attending tree stage training in the Republic of Korea as part of the initiative.
This will be a significant step in improving Mongolian library services.” stated Amartuvshin Amgalanbayar, the Deputy Governor of the Capital City of Mongolia responsible for the Social Sector, Green Development, and Air and Environmental Pollution.
Founded in 1980, the Ulaanbaatar City Central Public Library has been in operation for more than 45 years. The capital’s five districts are home to branch libraries that serve between 150 and 200 thousand patrons each year with more than half a million print and digital volumes.
Additionally, since 2016, specific services for the blind and visually impaired have been implemented, utilizing braille and NVDA screen readers to serve approximately 350 special needs people each year with more than 3,000 library volumes.
