Two-level intersections will be constructed at eight locations as part of the Tuul Highway project

One of the 24 mega projects to develop Ulaanbaatar involves expanding the capital’s road network through the Tuul Highway, which is one of the projects.

The Highway is planned to cover a total distance of 32 km, starting from the four-lane Nalaikh Highway, or Bayanzurkh Bridge, and continuing to the Safety Circle in Songinokhairkhan district. This highway will be the initial one in Ulaanbaatar that has six lanes without any traffic lights or crossroads.

The aim of this project is to reduce traffic congestion in the city center, improve traffic efficiency, support economic growth, save time for citizens, and create a road network with modern standards.

Two-level intersections will be at eight locations, 9,870-meter-long bridges at 13 locations, and 370-meter-long tunnels will be at seven locations as part of the New Ring Road.

The planned multi-level intersection entrance and exit at the south end of the First Ring Road and the National Park will connect to the Bogd Mountain Tunnel and Hunnu City, providing an opportunity to divert traffic from the city.

By linking the entrance and exit sections on the western side of the Yarmag Bridge to the main road, traffic load in the city center will be balanced. The sections connecting to the thermal power plant-4 and Naadamchin Bridge, the First Ring Road, Sonsgolon Road, and the Auto Trade Complex will regulate the flow of traffic in and out of the city, which will allow for the regulation of traffic in the central area.

Additionally, the Ulaanbaatar city’s vertical axis highway and ring roads No. 1 and 2 are supposed to be connected to the planned multi-level intersection in the safety circle in the western part of the city, which branches off into the western province, forming a ring road network around Ulaanbaatar.

The project’s construction is scheduled to begin in 2025–2027 and will be finished in phases in compliance with international standards.
